I was driving home the other evening and passed a herd of maybe 100 horses. The flies and mosquitoes are bad right now and the horses were milling and agitated. A few of them broke into a run and the whole herd stated to run, parallel to the road, so right alongside me. I stopped and rolled down the window so I could watch and listen to the hoofbeats. Stunning. I was reminded of Saskatchewan visual artist Joe Fafard’s great piece, Running Horses, and I found this video of Joe talking about the horse in art and his piece installed at the National Gallery of Canada. What he says supports my own interest in the horse as a symbol in Cool Water/Juliet in August.
